How to feed freeze-dried tripe
Two ways to use it, the label numbers, and handling for a raw product.
Updated
Give tripe in small amounts, as a treat or a meal topper, because the label lists about 119.4 kcal per ounce and at least 31 percent crude fat, and our tripe is not a complete diet. VCA's guideline gives treats about a tenth of a dog's daily calories and leaves the other nine tenths to a complete and balanced food (VCA, Dog Treats, opened 2026-10-16). Your vet can tell you what that means for your dog.

Two ways to serve it
As a treat
Break one piece into fingernail sized bits and hand them over one per good decision. The smaller the bits, the more rewards a piece covers.
As a topper
Sprinkle crumbs from a piece onto kibble or a raw meal, and stop at a pinch. It is a flavor on the bowl, not a second meal.
With water nearby
Leave fresh water down, and stay in the room until the last crumb is gone.
Treat budget calculator
Type in a daily calorie number and the tripe version of a 10 percent treat share appears.
Use the number from your vet or your dog food bag.
The calculator multiplies your number by 0.10 and divides by the label's energy figure, using the treat share VCA mentions. It is arithmetic, not a feeding plan, and your vet sets the real target.
Energy figure: 4,211 kcal ME/kg from the package label of Freeze-Dried Tripe Dog Treats: Raw, Single Ingredient.
The label numbers
The package label shows crude protein at 49 percent minimum, crude fat at 31 percent minimum, crude fiber at 13 percent maximum and moisture at 10 percent maximum, with 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram. The fat and calorie figures are why we say a little goes a long way. Dogs on a restricted or prescription diet, or with a history of stomach trouble, should have a vet's go ahead first. VCA also suggests introducing a new treat slowly and giving only a small piece at first.
Storage
It is freeze-dried and shelf stable, so it does not go in the fridge or freezer. Press the seal closed every time you take some out, and store the bag out of heat, sun and damp. Closed, it is fine in the car. The smell problem only starts when someone forgets the seal.
Handling a raw product
Our tripe is raw beef tripe that has been freeze-dried. The FDA's advice for raw pet food is a soap and water hand wash of 20 seconds or more after handling it, and cleaning anything it touched, bowls and counters included (FDA, Get the Facts! Raw Pet Food Diets can be Dangerous to You and Your Pet, opened 2026-10-16). VCA tells owners to be wary of freeze-dried raw treats because of contamination risk, for the dog and for the other pets and people at home. More on the sources in can dogs eat tripe.
Sizes and how long a bag lasts
The three sizes are 1.5, 2 and 4 ounces. Because the label lists about 119.4 kcal per ounce, an ounce is a lot of treat for a small dog. Divide a piece into bits, count them toward the treat share, and a bag lasts longer than you would guess. A larger dog gets the same small bits. The calculator above turns your dog's daily calories into a ceiling for the day, and your vet can confirm the number.
Tripe among the other organ treats
Tripe is one of several single ingredient organ and offal treats. The same feeding rules apply to all of them: small bits, a small share of the day, and a vet's opinion first. If you are adding freeze-dried beef liver next to tripe, introduce one at a time.
Which bag first
For a dog new to tripe, start with the 1.5 ounce bag. It is the cheapest way to find out two things at once: whether your dog cares, and whether you can live with the smell. Move to the 2 ounce or 4 ounce bag once both answers are yes.
Questions
How much tripe can I give my dog?
As a treat or topper in small amounts. The label lists about 119.4 kcal per ounce, and VCA suggests treats be about 10 percent of daily calories. Use the calculator above for the arithmetic and ask your vet for your dog's target.
Can dogs eat tripe every day?
We cannot say what is right for your dog. Count it toward the treat share, introduce it slowly, and ask your vet before making it a habit.
Does the bag need to go in the fridge?
No. Shelf storage is fine as long as the seal is closed and the spot stays dry.
Can I mix tripe into my dog's regular food?
Yes, as a topper: crumble a small amount over the bowl. Count it toward the treat share, and keep the bowl and your hands clean afterward, because the tripe is a raw product.
How big should the pieces be?
Fingernail sized or smaller for most dogs. Smaller bits make one piece cover more rewards, and they are easier to eat slowly under watch.
Do I need to wash my hands after feeding it?
Yes. Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, as the FDA advises after handling raw pet food, and clean the bowl.
