Soaking freeze-dried tripe in water, step by step
Updated
Here is how to rehydrate freeze dried tripe: break a piece, cover it with plain water, and serve it as a treat or a topper. We set no soak time, so prepare only what you plan to serve. Water does not change that it is raw, so wash hands and bowl with soap and water when you finish.
Can you rehydrate freeze-dried tripe?
Yes. We say our tripe may be soaked in water. That is our word, not the bag's. Soaking comes from us as guidance, and it stays optional.
The pieces are also made to be given dry, as a reward or as a topper. If your dog does well with the rough, crunchy texture we describe, you can skip the water. Soaking is for the owner who wants a softer piece, and we claim no other reason for it. It does nothing we promise for your dog beyond changing the texture of what you hand over.
How do you soak freeze-dried tripe?
Keep it plain. Here are the steps:
- Break the piece over a bowl, into bits that suit your dog.
- Cover the bits with plain water.
- Let them sit in the water.
- Serve them to your dog.
That is the whole method, and it is short on purpose. A bowl, a piece of tripe and plain water are all it takes, and the only judgment left is how soft you want the result. We give no soak time, no water temperature and no water amount, and we will not invent one. If a number matters for your dog, your vet is the person to ask.
Water is the only liquid we mention, and we leave it there.
How do you serve soaked tripe?
The bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." Soaked pieces fit the same two ways as the dry ones: as a treat, handed out one bit at a time, or as a topper over kibble or a raw meal. Our tripe topper guide covers toppers in more detail, and it is the place to go if a meal is the plan.
Whichever way you go, the label asks for fresh water at all times and for supervision while your dog eats. Keep the bowl of drinking water out, and stay in the room.
Soaked or dry, the tripe is a treat or a topper and never the whole meal. Our tripe is green, unbleached beef tripe from a farm in the United States, and it is raw. Scrub up with soap and water once you are done handling it, and rinse the bowl too.
How much should you soak at once?
Only what you will serve at that sitting, which means breaking up just the amount you plan to hand out. We give no guidance for keeping soaked tripe, so we do not suggest saving any for later. The dry tripe in the bag is a separate matter, and it goes back into a closed bag in a cool, dry spot.
Our guidance for the dry tripe is to use an opened bag within 30 days, and the best by date is printed on the bag. Soaking a few bits does not change that, because the rest of the bag stays dry and sealed.
Weigh the tripe dry, before it goes in the water. The calculator and the label figure of about 119.4 kcal per ounce are for tripe straight from the bag, so a weight taken after soaking would not match them. Our weighing guide walks through the kitchen scale. You can find the three sizes, 1.5, 2 and 4 ounces, on the freeze-dried beef tripe page.
Questions
Does the bag say to soak it?
No. Soaking is our guidance, not the bag's. The bag gives the tripe dry, as a treat or a meal topper, and a soaked piece is simply one way to serve it if you want it softer.
Can I use broth or milk instead of water?
We say plain water, and nothing else. We have no guidance on any other liquid, so we cannot tell you how a piece would turn out in one, and we do not recommend trying.
How long should I soak it?
We set no time and will not give one. Soak until the piece is as soft as you want, and then serve it. If you need a number for your dog, ask your vet.
Can I keep soaked tripe for later?
We give no guidance on keeping soaked tripe, so soak only what you will serve at that sitting. If you need a plan for leftovers, ask your vet before you try one.
Is soaked tripe still raw?
Yes. Water does not cook it, and the tripe was raw before it was freeze-dried. After you handle it, wash your hands with soap and water, and wash the bowl you soaked it in as well.
Do I weigh it before or after soaking?
Before, while it is dry. The label figure and the calculator are for tripe from the bag, so weigh it dry, then soak that weight. The weighing guide has the steps.
Can I soak tripe for an older or small dog?
Yes. Our tripe suits small dogs too, so break the bits small and soak them the same way you would for any other dog. If your dog's mouth is the reason you are soaking, talk it over with your vet.
