Can dogs eat tripe?

What tripe is, what named sources say about raw foods, and how to keep it to a small treat.

Updated

Sometimes, in small amounts, after you ask your vet: that is the honest answer, because tripe for dogs is usually raw. It is sold raw, frozen and freeze-dried, and a treat like ours is not a complete diet. Raw versions carry the bacteria risks that VCA and the FDA describe for raw pet foods, and VCA's own summary is blunt: "The risks of feeding raw food outweigh potential benefits." Your dog's age, medical history and diet change the answer.

Raw beef tripe, freeze-dried, nothing added. Listed for adult dogs, medium and large, as a treat or topper.

What tripe is

Tripe is stomach from cattle, sheep or another grazing animal. On our label, beef tripe means it comes from cattle. The longer definition, including the stomach chambers and the difference between white and raw tripe, is on what is tripe, and the term green tripe has its own page. This page is only about the feeding question.

The white tripe in a butcher case has been boiled and bleached for cooking, while tripe sold for dogs is usually raw, and ours is raw. That is why the sources below are about raw food.

What the sources say about raw

  • VCA cites a 2011 to 2012 screening of commercial raw dog foods in which close to a quarter of samples carried harmful bacteria, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes among them. It warns of risk both to the dog and to the person handling the food, and says a dog can pass the bacteria on through saliva or feces to other pets that never ate raw. VCA names children, older adults, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems as more likely to get seriously ill from Salmonella (VCA, Dogs and Raw Food Diets, opened 2026-10-16). If you feed raw anyway, VCA asks you to let your vet know.
  • VCA on freeze-dried raw treats tells owners to be wary of them because of contamination risk, for the dog eating the treat and for the other pets and people around it (VCA, Dog Treats, opened 2026-10-16).
  • The FDA tested 196 samples of raw dog and cat food bought online: 15 had Salmonella and 32 had Listeria monocytogenes. Its advice is a 20 second hand wash with soap and water after you handle raw pet food, plus cleaning and disinfecting the bowls, counters and tools it touches (FDA, Get the Facts! Raw Pet Food Diets can be Dangerous to You and Your Pet, opened 2026-10-16).

Our tripe is a raw product that has been freeze-dried. We tell you that plainly because it affects how you handle it, and you should weigh it with your vet. If anyone in your home is very young, older, pregnant or has a medical condition, take that into account.

What our label shows

The tripe treat has one ingredient on the label: beef tripe. The package lists a minimum of 31 percent crude fat and about 119.4 kcal per ounce, so each piece packs a lot for its size. We sell it as a reward or a bowl topper, and it is not built to be the whole diet. We list it for adult dogs, medium and large, make no statement about puppies, and do not suggest it for cats.

If you decide to offer it

  1. Ask your vet first, especially if your dog has a medical condition, a sensitive stomach or a special diet.
  2. Begin with a small piece. VCA's treat guidance is to try new things gradually, one at a time.
  3. Keep treats to a small share of the day. VCA's rule of thumb caps treats at about a tenth of daily calories.
  4. Wash your hands after handling, clean bowls and surfaces, and give fresh water.
  5. Stay nearby while your dog eats, and stop if anything looks wrong.

The how to feed tripe page has the practical side, including a budget calculator based on the label energy figure.

Signs to take seriously

VCA lists vomiting, diarrhea that is often bloody, fever, not eating and lethargy as signs of Salmonella illness in dogs. A dog can also carry the bacteria and show nothing, which is why VCA stresses the risk to the rest of the household. If you see any of those signs after a new food, call your vet. This site does not diagnose anything and cannot tell you whether tripe is right for a given dog.

Who should skip it

Skip beef tripe if your dog does not do well with beef, and skip it if your vet has put your dog on a restricted or prescription diet. Our listing names adult dogs, medium and large, and says nothing about puppies, so we have nothing to add there. Tripe is not a treat we suggest for cats. When in doubt, a plain, familiar treat that your vet approves is a better choice than a new raw one.

Questions

Should I tell my vet I give raw treats?

Yes. VCA asks owners who feed raw to tell their veterinarian, who may be able to suggest safer options. Our tripe is raw and freeze-dried, so it counts.

Is tripe good for your dog?

We make no medical claims. We can tell you what is on the label (raw beef tripe, freeze-dried, one ingredient) and what VCA and the FDA say about raw foods. Whether it suits your dog is a question for your vet.

Can dogs eat beef tripe?

Ours is beef tripe and nothing else, so that is the version we can speak to. If beef does not agree with your dog, skip it. Otherwise start small and ask your vet.

Is green tripe good for dogs?

The same advice applies. Green tripe is raw, which brings the handling cautions above, and ours is green tripe, unbleached and freeze-dried raw. See green tripe for dogs.

Can puppies eat tripe?

We have no puppy information to offer, because our listing is for adult dogs, medium and large. Ask your vet before giving a puppy any raw product.

What should I do after handling raw tripe?

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, then clean the bowl and any surface it touched, as the FDA advises for raw pet food.
