Measuring freeze-dried tripe by weight, not pieces
Updated
How to weigh freeze-dried tripe is the easy part: put a small container on a kitchen scale, zero it, and add tripe until the display reads the grams the treat budget calculator gave you. Our listing gives no piece weight or piece count, so weight is the honest measure, not a handful or a piece.
Why weigh freeze-dried tripe instead of counting pieces?
Because a piece is not a unit we can give you. Ours are freeze-dried raw beef tripe, and neither the label nor the listing gives a piece weight or a piece count. The listing's scorecard lists the piece as medium with a strong smell, but medium is a description, not a weight. Our listing says to break a piece into bite-sized bits, and a bit has no listed weight either.
The label gives its energy figure by weight: 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram, approximately 119.4 kcal per ounce. Every number you could want to work from is a number per ounce or per kilogram. So weighing dog treats on a kitchen scale is not fussiness; it is the only way to connect the label to what lands in the dog. Count pieces and you are guessing. Weigh them and you are not.
How do you get a daily number to weigh against?
From the treat budget calculator on our feeding guide. You type in your dog's daily calories, the number from your vet or from the food bag, and the calculator takes a share of it for treats. Its default setting is a 10 percent treat share, and your vet sets the real target. It then shows how much of our tripe that share equals, as whole grams and as ounces to one decimal, using the energy figure from the label.
It gives weight only. No piece counts, no breed presets, no feeding amounts of its own. It is arithmetic on two numbers, the label's and yours, which is exactly what makes it something you can weigh against. Write the grams on the bag with a marker and you will not have to look it up again. Owners of big dogs will find the same arithmetic walked through on the large dogs page, with the same answer: weigh it.
How do you weigh it on a kitchen scale?
The routine, once the calculator has given you a number:
- Set a small container on the scale.
- Zero the scale so the container weighs nothing.
- Add tripe until the display reads the calculator's grams.
- Press the bag shut.
- Break the day's share into bits as you go, or crumble it over the meal.
- Wash your hands.
Whole pieces are fine to weigh. A piece that tips the scale past your number can be snapped and part of it put back.
The tripe is raw, so the wash at the end is not optional. Wash the container with soap and water too before it goes back in the cupboard.
How do you handle crumbs and topper days?
Crumbs weigh what they weigh. If the bottom of the bag is dust, tip it into the container and it counts toward the day's grams like anything else. The daily tripe share by weight does not care whether the tripe arrived as a piece or a pile.
Topper days are the same measurement in a different bowl. Our listing says to crumble a piece over kibble or a raw meal. Weigh the share first, then crumble that share over the food rather than crumbling freely and hoping. If the dog gets rewards and a topper on the same day, both come out of the same number.
The bag says: "Press the tripe bag shut after every handful and keep it somewhere cool and dry."
Weighing tends to leave the bag open on the counter longer than a quick handful does, so make the seal part of the routine before you walk away. The label also notes that the tripe is not meant as a complete diet, which is another way of saying the share is small. The product page has the label figures if you want to check the energy line yourself.
Questions
What if my scale only reads in ounces?
Use the ounces. The calculator shows its result both ways, as whole grams and as ounces to one decimal, so read the ounce figure instead and weigh to that. Most kitchen scales switch units with one button, but if yours does not, the ounce number from the calculator is just as good.
Do I weigh before or after breaking it up?
Either. Breaking a piece does not change what it weighs, so a whole piece and the same piece in bits read the same on the scale. Weighing whole is quicker, and breaking afterward over the container keeps the crumbs where they count. Do whichever fits the way you hand it out.
Can I weigh a few days at once?
You can weigh several shares in one sitting and keep each in its own sealed container, one per day. Nothing then has to be measured again until they run out. We have no figure for how an open share keeps over time, so keep the containers closed and somewhere cool and dry, as the bag asks for the bag itself.
How accurate does the scale need to be?
An ordinary kitchen scale that reads in single grams is enough. The calculator rounds to whole grams, so a scale that does the same matches it. You are measuring a treat share, not a prescription, and the number came from your dog's daily calories in the first place. Ask your vet if you want that number checked.
Does weighing change if the bag is old?
Not that we can tell you. The label lists moisture at a maximum of 10 percent, and we have no figure for how an open bag changes over time. Weigh the same grams, keep the bag pressed shut between shares, and if something about an older bag seems off, contact Sniff and Shift rather than guessing.
