Crumbling freeze-dried tripe over your dog's bowl
Updated
A tripe topper for dogs is a piece of freeze-dried tripe crumbled over a bowl of kibble or a raw meal. Use a little, because the label gives about 119.4 kcal per ounce, and count it in the day like any treat. The tripe is raw, so wash your hands afterward.
How do you use freeze-dried tripe as a topper?
Take one piece from the bag and crumble it over the meal. That is the whole technique. The listing names two uses: break a piece into bite-sized bits and hand them out as a reward, or crumble it over kibble or a raw meal. Topper is the second one. The how to use a bag section on the product page shows both side by side.
Here is the routine from start to finish:
- Crumble a piece over the bowl
- Press the bag shut so the smell stays inside
- Put fresh water out
- Wash your hands
- Count the tripe in the day
Green tripe has a strong smell, and the listing says so up front. If the first piece makes your kitchen smell like a barn, that is what tripe is like. The seal keeps the smell with the bag and not with the pantry.
How much tripe goes on one meal?
A little. The product page describes it as a treat or a topper, with about 119.4 kcal per ounce and a minimum of 31% crude fat, which is the reason a little is enough. We do not give grams, spoons or pinches here, because those would be numbers we made up, and the label does not print any of them.
What the label does print is the energy: 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram, approximately 119.4 per ounce. Our feeding guide has a treat budget calculator that turns 10 percent of your dog's daily calories into a number you can hold the tripe against.
When in doubt, use less than you think. You can always crumble a bit more at the next meal, and you cannot take it back out of the bowl.
Does a tripe topper work on kibble or a raw meal?
Not much. The listing says to crumble it over kibble or a raw meal, and it makes no distinction between them. The tripe goes on top either way, and the amount is the same.
What does change is how you handle the bowl. A raw meal and a raw topper are both raw, so wash your hands after you handle either one. Kibble is a dry food, and the tripe is a dry food, so that bowl is the tidier of the two. It is also the easier place to see how much you have added.
If you are weighing a raw meal, weigh the tripe too. It is a small amount, but it still counts toward the day.
How do topper days count against treats?
A topper is a treat that happens to land in a bowl. It counts the same as the bits you hand out by hand, which means a topper day is a treat day.
If you give tripe on top of breakfast, the budget for the afternoon gets smaller. If you hand out bits at training time, the topper at dinner should shrink to match. The calculator on the feeding guide does that arithmetic for you.
When is a topper not the answer?
Two things, and only two. First, the bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." It also says the tripe is not a complete diet, so it sits on top of a meal and does not replace one. Fresh water should be out, and you should watch your dog while it eats.
Second, if your dog has stopped eating its meals, that is a question for your vet, not for a topper. A crumble of anything on top of a bowl will not answer a question about why the bowl is being left. We do not promise that a topper will change what a dog does, and we would be wary of anyone who does.
For everything else, the guides hub lists the rest of what we have written about tripe.
Questions
Can I use the crumbs at the bottom of the bag?
Yes. Crumbs are the same tripe as the pieces, with one ingredient and nothing added. They suit a topper well, since a topper is crumbled anyway. Count them the way you would count a piece, by weight.
How fine should I crumble it?
Fine enough that the bits spread over the bowl rather than sitting in one lump. Crumble it with your fingers over the bowl so nothing lands on the counter, then wash your hands, since the tripe is raw. The amount matters more than the size of the crumbs.
Can I top every meal?
That depends on your dog's day, and the day has a budget. The calculator on our feeding guide turns 10 percent of your dog's daily calories into a budget. Fit the tripe inside it, and ask your vet about anything specific to your dog.
Does a topper day replace treats that day?
Not automatically. The tripe on the bowl counts toward the same total as every other treat. If you top breakfast, plan the rest of the day with that in mind and keep the whole count in view.
Which bag size suits a topper habit?
The listing suggests the 1.5 ounce bag if your dog has never had tripe, so start there. Once your dog has decided it likes tripe on the bowl, the 2 and 4 ounce bags hold the same tripe in larger amounts. Press the seal shut after each piece.
How do I keep the bowl from smelling?
Green tripe smells, and that is part of the deal. Press the bag shut after you take a piece, and wash the bowl after the meal. The listing says an open bag announces itself, so a closed one keeps the smell where it belongs.
