Freeze-dried tripe shelf life, sealed and opened

Updated

How long does freeze-dried tripe last? Our guidance is best by 1 year from production, and the best by date is printed on the bag, so read the bag instead of counting months. Once you open it, use it within 30 days, stored cool, dry and well sealed. The year and the 30 days are our guidance, not label text.

How long does a sealed bag of freeze-dried tripe last?

Sniff and Shift says best by 1 year from production. We give that for every bag, and it is our guidance, not wording from the bag.

The trouble with "1 year from production" is that production is not a date you can see. The number that matters is the best by date printed on the bag. If you are ever unsure how old a bag is, that date answers it, and you do not have to do any arithmetic.

A sealed bag is the easy case. The product page describes our tripe as freeze-dried and shelf stable, with no refrigeration needed. So the only clock on a sealed bag is the best by date. Where the bag sits in the house is a separate question, and our guide to storing freeze-dried tripe covers it, along with keeping the smell inside the bag.

Where do you find the best by date?

On the bag. The best by date is printed there, and that is the date we tell you to go by. We do not say where on the bag it sits, so give the bag a quick turn in your hands and look it over.

If you cannot find it, or the print is hard to read, contact Sniff and Shift with the size you bought and we will help. Please do not guess from how long ago you ordered.

A few plain points about the date:

  • It belongs to that one bag, so check each bag you own.
  • It applies to a sealed bag. Once a bag is open, the 30 days below take over.
  • It is the date to check when you look through the cupboard, not a date to work out yourself.

How long does tripe last once the bag is open?

Our guidance is to use an opened bag within 30 days. That is the figure we give for how long an opened bag of tripe should hang around, and it counts from the day you open the bag. It does not count from the day the bag arrived.

Here is how the two clocks fit together. A sealed bag goes by its best by date. An opened bag goes by the 30 days. If the best by date comes first, go by the date. If the 30 days comes first, go by the 30 days.

For an open bag, the storage line on the label still applies. The bag says: "Press the tripe bag shut after every handful and keep it somewhere cool and dry." Our own guidance adds one word to that: keep it well sealed.

Our tripe is raw before it is freeze-dried, so wash your hands with soap and water after you handle it. Beyond that, we give no other signs to look for and no other timeline. If something about a particular bag seems off, contact Sniff and Shift.

How do you keep track of the day you opened it?

An opening date is easy to forget, so put it in writing. The routine is short:

  1. Write the opening date on the bag in marker the day you open it.
  2. Close the seal after each handful.
  3. Keep it cool and dry.
  4. Plan to finish it within 30 days.

That is the whole system. A date on the bag lets you see at a glance where you stand.

Picking a size you will finish helps the most. Our bag sizes guide lays out the three net weights, 1.5, 2 and 4 ounces, so you can match the bag to the way you use it. A bag that is still half full when the 30 days run out was a size too big.

Inside is one ingredient, green beef tripe. It comes from a farm in the United States and stays raw until we freeze-dry it, a small batch at a time, in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

Every bag on the freeze-dried beef tripe page carries a best by date, and the same 30 days apply to whichever size you open. Treats are one part of the day, and the bag is clear on that too: it is not a complete diet, so keep your dog's regular food as the meal.

Questions

Does freeze-dried tripe go bad?

Our guidance is simple. Use a sealed bag by its best by date, use an opened bag within 30 days, and keep it cool, dry and well sealed. We do not describe what happens beyond that. If something about your bag seems off, contact Sniff and Shift and we will help.

Is the 30 days printed on the bag?

No. The bag prints the best by date. The 30 days after opening is our guidance, and so is the 1 year from production behind the date. Write your opening date on the bag in marker so the 30 days is easy to count.

Does the 30 days start when the bag arrives?

No, it starts when you open the bag. A sealed bag goes by its best by date, so you can leave it sealed until you are ready. Write the date on the bag the day you open it and count from there.

What should I do with tripe past its best by date?

Our guidance is to use tripe by its best by date. If you are unsure about a particular bag, contact Sniff and Shift rather than guessing. Ask your vet about anything to do with your own dog's meals.

Does a bigger bag get longer once it is open?

No. The same 30 days applies to every size, whether the bag holds 1.5, 2 or 4 ounces. That makes the smaller bags a good match for a dog that takes tripe slowly. Choose the size you will finish inside the 30 days.

Can I buy a bag now for later?

Yes, a sealed bag goes by its best by date, so check the date when the bag arrives and plan around it. Keep it sealed until you want to use it. The 30 days only starts when you open it.
