Freeze-dried tripe for a small dog, bit by bit
Updated
Tripe for small dogs is a fair question, and we say our freeze-dried tripe suits them too. The pieces are roughly bite size, so break them into smaller bits, hand them out one at a time, and count them in the day. Start with the 1.5 ounce bag, and ask your vet about your own dog.
Can small dogs have freeze-dried tripe?
We say yes, our tripe suits small dogs too. That is a newer line than the one our listing started with, because the listing was first written with medium and large dogs in mind. We now say small dogs too.
What does not change is the bag. Inside is one ingredient: green beef tripe, never bleached, sourced from a farm in the United States and freeze-dried raw. Because it is raw, wash your hands with soap and water after you handle the pieces, and wash the bowl if one was used. Use it two ways, as a reward or as a topper: break a piece into bits and hand them out, or crumble it over kibble or a raw meal. Neither use turns it into a complete diet.
We do not say anything about your dog's mouth, stomach or size class beyond that. Those are questions for your vet, who knows the dog and can say what fits.
How small should you break tripe for a small dog?
Smaller than the pieces come. We describe them as roughly bite size, and that is a bite for a bigger dog. A small dog has a smaller bite, so break each piece down before it goes anywhere near the dog.
Our guide to breaking up freeze-dried tripe shows how to snap a piece by hand. We give no sizes in numbers, so go by your dog: bits that look small to you for the dog in front of you are the right ones.
The routine for a small dog is short:
- Break the piece into smaller bits first.
- Hand out one bit at a time.
- Keep water out and stay with your dog while they eat.
- Count what you gave toward the day.
Rough and crunchy is how we describe the texture. If you want a softer bit, plain water will do it, and we set no soak time.
How much tripe fits a small dog's day?
Not much, and the label's energy figure shows why. The bag lists about 119.4 kcal per ounce, so a little goes a long way for a small dog.
Our feeding guide has a treat budget calculator that turns this into a weight. Enter the daily calorie figure for your dog, taken from your vet or printed on your dog's food bag. Its treat share is fixed at 10 percent, and a figure from your vet is the only thing that replaces it. It shows weight in grams and ounces, and nothing else. We give no example results here, because your dog's number is the one that counts.
The bag says: "Provide fresh water at all times and supervise while feeding."
Which bag size suits a small dog?
Our listing's advice for a dog new to tripe is the 1.5 ounce bag. That is also the smallest bag we sell, and the other two are 2 and 4 ounces. If it goes well, the larger bags are there for later, and nothing about the tripe differs from one size to the next. For a sealed bag, our guidance is best by 1 year from production, and the best by date is printed on the bag.
One more thing decides it. Our guidance is to use an opened bag within 30 days, and a small dog gets a small share. That makes the pick matter: choose the size you expect to finish inside that window. Our bag size guide sets the three sizes side by side, and the freeze-dried beef tripe page has them to choose from.
Questions
Can a toy breed have tripe?
We say small dogs too, so a toy breed is included. Break the pieces very small, since a tiny dog has a tiny bite. Questions about your own dog's mouth or diet belong with your vet.
Can a small dog have a whole piece?
The pieces are roughly bite size, which is a bigger bite for a small dog. Break each piece down before you hand it over, give one bit at a time, and watch your dog while it eats.
Can I soak tripe for a small dog?
Yes, in plain water. We give no soak time or water amount, so keep the soak to the bits going out right away. Soaked tripe is still raw tripe, so use soap and water on your hands and the bowl after.
Is the 1.5 ounce bag the smallest?
Yes. The smallest bag is 1.5 ounces, and the others are 2 and 4 ounces. For a dog that has never had tripe, our listing says to start with the smallest.
Is tripe for puppies too?
We make no statement about puppies. If you have a young dog, ask your vet before you give tripe. Our line about small dogs does not settle the question for a puppy.
Does a small dog need its own bag in a house with big dogs?
No. One bag is enough for the whole house. Break the pieces smaller for the small dog, hand out the bits one dog at a time, and keep each dog's day within its own share.
