How many calories a bag of freeze-dried tripe holds

Updated

Freeze dried tripe calories come off the label: about 119.4 kcal per ounce, next to 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram. The bag does not print a figure for the whole bag, so we computed one from the label figure: about 179 kcal in the 1.5 ounce bag, 239 in the 2 ounce and 478 in the 4 ounce.

How many calories are in an ounce of freeze-dried tripe?

About 119.4 kcal. That is the per ounce figure printed in the guaranteed analysis on the bag, and it sits beside the metabolizable energy line of 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram. Both numbers are on the label. Neither one is ours.

If you want the full analysis read line by line, the guaranteed analysis guide walks through it, including what the min and max columns mean. This page stays on the calories.

One thing worth saying plainly: tripe calories per ounce describe weight, not pieces. The label gives no piece weight and no piece count, so an ounce is an ounce on a kitchen scale, however many bits it turns out to be.

How many calories does each bag size hold?

Our bags come in three net weights, 1.5, 2 and 4 ounces, taken from the size names on the listing. The bag prints the per ounce figure only, so the per bag totals below are arithmetic we did, not label text.

Bag sizeCalories, computed from the label figure
1.5 ouncesabout 179 kcal
2 ouncesabout 239 kcal
4 ouncesabout 478 kcal

Those are the calories in a bag of tripe when the bag is full and unopened. Once you have handed some out, the number left in the bag is smaller, and the only honest way to know it is to weigh what remains.

The same tripe goes into all three bags, so the per ounce figure does not move between sizes. Only the total does, because there is more tripe in the bigger bag.

Why does the label print kilograms as well as ounces?

Because both figures are on the label, and we report what the label shows. The kilogram line is the metabolizable energy figure, 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram. The ounce figure, approximately 119.4 kcal, is printed with it. We do not have a bag explanation for the pairing, so we will not make one up.

Use whichever one matches your kitchen scale. The ounce figure suits a scale set to ounces, and the kilogram figure is there if your scale or your vet works in metric.

How do the calorie numbers fit a daily treat budget?

This is where the label figure earns its keep. The treat budget calculator on our feeding guide asks for one number, your dog's daily calories, and turns it into a weight of tripe. It uses the label's energy figure to do that, and it reports the result in grams and ounces, not pieces.

The calculator runs at its default 10 percent treat share. That is a setting on the page, not a rule from us, and the number that matters is the one your vet gives you for your dog. If you do not have a daily calorie target, ask your vet before you lean on the calculator.

Tripe treat calories are still treat calories. The bag says: "Not intended as a complete diet." A topper day or a long training session counts against the same budget as any other treat, and the label figure is how you count it.

The tripe is sold raw and freeze-dried, so wash your hands after handling it, scale or no scale.

Questions

Does the calorie figure change once the bag is open?

The figure on the label does not change. It describes an ounce of the tripe, and that stays about 119.4 kcal whether the bag was opened today or last month. What changes is how much tripe is left, so weigh what you hand out rather than guessing from a half empty bag.

Are tripe calories mostly from fat?

The label does not say. It lists crude fat at a minimum of 31 percent and crude protein at a minimum of 49 percent, and it does not break the calories down by source. We are not going to compute a split the bag does not print. If the fat figure matters for your dog, bring the label to your vet.

Can I count tripe calories by the piece?

Not with our numbers. The label gives weight based figures only, and no piece weight or piece count appears anywhere on the bag or the listing. A kitchen scale solves it: weigh the pieces you plan to hand out, then multiply by the per ounce figure.

Why is the per bag number marked as computed?

Because the bag does not print it. The label gives kcal per kilogram and kcal per ounce, and we multiplied the ounce figure by the net weight in each size name. The word computed tells you who did the arithmetic. If you want the printed figure, it is the per ounce one.

Where do I find my dog's daily calorie number?

Ask your vet. Some dog food bags also list a daily calorie amount by weight, and that can be a starting point to bring to the appointment. Once you have a number, the treat budget calculator on our feeding guide takes it and shows you what its default treat share weighs in tripe.
