Giving freeze-dried tripe to an older adult dog

Updated

Tripe for senior dogs starts with your vet, because our listing names adult dogs, medium and large, and says nothing about age. Ask before the first bag. If your vet agrees, the practical side is the same as for any adult dog: small bits as a reward or crumbs over the bowl, counted against the day.

Can a senior dog have freeze-dried tripe?

Our product data has no senior line in it. The listing says the tripe is for adult dogs, medium and large, and that is the whole statement of who it is for. We make no claim that tripe suits older dogs or does anything for them. This page covers only the handling: piece size, the bowl, the treat budget and the questions for your vet.

What is in the bag is raw beef tripe, freeze-dried, with one ingredient on the label. It is green tripe, unbleached, from a farm in the United States, and it is freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Because it is raw, wash your hands after you handle it, the same as you would after handling any raw food in your kitchen.

Whatever your older dog eats now, the vet conversation comes before the first bag and not after it. We sell tripe. We do not know your dog, and we are not going to pretend we do.

How small should you break it for an older dog?

The listing's instruction for a reward is to break a piece into bite-sized bits and hand them out one at a time. It gives no size in inches or grams, and neither do we. Bite-sized means your dog's bite, so a dog that takes smaller mouthfuls gets smaller bits. That is the whole rule, and it is a rule about the dog in front of you rather than about age.

The listing's scorecard lists the piece as medium with a strong smell, and gives it 3 of 5 for crunch. What that means for your dog's mouth is a question for your vet. The product page has the photos and the label figures if you want to look before you buy.

Start smaller than you think you need to. You can always hand out another bit. You cannot make a bit smaller once the dog has it.

Is crumbling it over the bowl easier than a whole piece?

For a dog that would rather eat from the bowl than take bits from a hand, the listing's second use is to crumble a piece over kibble or a raw meal. Our topper guide covers how to crumble it and how much lands on the bowl, so we will not go over it twice. The short version is a little, counted in the day.

Crumbling tripe for an older dog also settles the size question without you deciding anything. Crumbs are small by definition. A tripe topper for older dogs is the same topper it is for any dog, because the bowl does not know how old the dog is.

How does tripe fit an older dog's treat budget?

The bag prints an energy figure: 4,211 kcal ME per kilogram, approximately 119.4 kcal per ounce. That number is the same in every bag size, so the budget question is only ever about how much you hand out.

Our feeding guide has a treat budget calculator. You type in your dog's daily calories, the number your vet gave you or the one on the food bag, and it shows how many grams and ounces of tripe fit a treat share set to the calculator's default of 10 percent. That default belongs to the calculator and not to us. Your vet sets the real target.

Think of the budget as one tank. The crumbs on the morning bowl and the bits handed out in the afternoon draw from the same tank, so a topper day leaves less room for rewards and a reward day leaves less room for a topper.

The bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." The bag also says the tripe is not intended as a complete diet, so it sits on top of the day and never in place of a meal.

What should you ask your vet before the first bag?

Three questions cover most of it. Take them to the visit, or send them in a message before you order.

  • Is a raw, freeze-dried treat fine for this dog? We wash our hands after handling it either way, and you should too.
  • What daily calorie number should go into the treat budget calculator?
  • Is there any reason to keep the bits very small for this dog?

Take the label along, or read it on our product page before you go. The guaranteed analysis on the bag is crude protein min 49%, crude fat min 31%, crude fiber max 13% and moisture max 10%, and your vet will know what to make of those lines far better than we do. Freeze dried tripe for senior dogs is not a different product from the one we sell for any adult dog. The difference is how closely you and your vet look at the dog eating it.

Questions

Is freeze-dried tripe too hard for an older dog?

We cannot tell you about your dog's mouth. Your vet can. What we can tell you is what the listing says: its scorecard gives the tripe 3 of 5 for crunch, and the two ways to use it are small bits handed out one at a time or crumbs over the bowl. Both make the piece smaller before your dog ever meets it.

Can I soften tripe for a senior dog?

You can soak it in plain water if you want a softer bit. That is our guidance, not the bag's, and we set no soak time, so soak only what you will serve. Anything about your older dog's mouth is a question for your vet.

Does an older dog need a smaller bag?

Not because of age. The bag sizes are 1.5, 2 and 4 ounces, and the tripe inside is the same in each. The listing says to start with the 1.5 ounce bag if your dog has never had tripe, and that advice is about a dog being new to tripe, not about how many years the dog has behind it.

Can a senior dog have tripe every week?

How often is between you and your vet, and how much is between you and the calculator on our feeding guide. We set no schedule for any dog. What we can say is that each piece counts against the day it is given, so a weekly habit and a daily habit are both a matter of what that day's budget holds.

What if my older dog has never had tripe?

Start with the 1.5 ounce bag. The listing says so for any dog that has never had tripe, and for any owner who has never smelled it, because the smell is strong. A small bag lets you find out how your dog takes to it before you commit to a bigger one.

Should a senior dog have water out with tripe?

Yes, for every dog. The bag's feeding lines ask for fresh water at all times and for you to supervise while feeding. Put the bowl down before the first bit, stay in the room until the last one is gone, and wash your hands when you are done, since the tripe is raw.
